Privacy Policy
Last updated:
This privacy policy applies to the apps published by Gnilebat Labs (operated by Johannes Tabeling), currently including Sonary and Kept. It explains what data the apps process and what they do not.
Short version: the apps work entirely on your device. We do not collect, upload, or sell your personal data. The only data leaving your device is what third-party ad and payment services need to function — described below — and, where an app offers it, you can remove ads with an in-app upgrade.

What data we collect ourselves
None. The apps do not contain analytics, telemetry, crash reporters, or any code that sends personal data to our servers. We do not operate any backend that stores user information.
Microphone access (Sonary)
Sonary requests microphone permission to compute sound levels in decibels. The audio signal is analyzed in real time, frame by frame, and is never recorded, written to storage, or transmitted anywhere. Only numeric decibel values may be saved — and only when you tap the Save button yourself.
Data saved on your device
The app stores the following on your device only (browser localStorage or the platform equivalent), never transmitted off-device:
- Calibration offset and reference level you set
- Chosen language, theme, and weighting (dBA / dBZ)
- Noise-warning threshold and duration
- Sessions you save (place tag, min/avg/max/peak/duration, and — if you opted into "Detailed Measurements" — a per-second time series of dB values for the session)
- Whether you have purchased the in-app Pro upgrade
You can delete any of this at any time from inside the app or by clearing the app's data in your device settings.
Photo and media access (Kept)
Kept is a photo-management app. With your permission it reads the photos in your device's media library so you can review, organize, and clean them up. All processing — grouping similar photos, detecting blurry shots and screenshots, and the optional on-device AI used to spot near-duplicates — runs entirely on your device. Your photos are never uploaded, copied off your device, or sent to us or anyone else.
When you delete photos, Kept moves them to your device's system trash ("Recently deleted") through Android, where you can restore them for a limited time. Kept never permanently deletes a photo without your confirmation, and never deletes anything automatically.
Kept stores the following on your device only, never transmitted off-device:
- Your settings (swipe actions, theme, language, and similar preferences)
- A local record of which photos you have already reviewed, so they don't reappear
- Compact on-device "fingerprints" of your photos used to group similar shots — numbers derived from each image, not the images themselves
- How many photos you've sorted today (for the free daily amount)
You can delete all of this at any time with "Reset everything" inside Kept, or by clearing the app's data in your device settings.
Third-party services we use
Google AdMob (free users only)
Unless you have removed ads via an in-app upgrade, the apps show advertising provided by Google AdMob — a banner ad, and in Kept an optional rewarded ad you can choose to watch to keep going past the daily free amount. AdMob is operated by Google LLC and may process the following to serve ads:
- Your advertising identifier (Android Advertising ID), which you can reset or disable in your device's privacy settings
- Your approximate location based on IP address
- Coarse device information (model, OS version, language)
- Interaction with the ad itself (impressions, clicks)
Google acts as an independent data controller for this data. Their processing is governed by the Google Privacy Policy and the AdMob Privacy & Messaging guidance. You can opt out of personalized advertising in your device's settings, or (where an app offers the upgrade) remove ads entirely with an in-app purchase. In the EU/EEA and UK, the apps show a Google consent (UMP) prompt before any personalized ads are served.
Google Play Billing (in-app upgrades)
In-app upgrades — such as removing ads — are processed by Google Play Billing. We never see your payment details. After a successful purchase, Google tells the app that you own the upgrade; the app stores this as a single flag on your device. We do not receive your name, address, email, or any other personal information from Google in this process.
Medical disclaimer
Sonary's "Hearing Safety" features show occupational exposure limits published by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). These are general public-health guidelines, not personalised medical advice. Sonary is not a medical device, does not diagnose hearing conditions, and does not replace evaluation by a qualified audiologist or physician. If you are concerned about your hearing, please consult a healthcare professional.
Children
The apps are rated for all ages and do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone. They contain no chat, no profiles, no user-generated content shared with others, and no in-app communication features.
Your rights under GDPR
Because we do not collect personal data ourselves, most GDPR data-subject rights have no data on our side to act on. Where rights are relevant they apply to the third parties listed above:
- Access, rectification, deletion: contact Google directly for any data they hold about you in connection with AdMob or Play Billing
- Opt-out of personalized ads: use your device's "Opt out of Ads Personalization" / "Limit Ad Tracking" setting, or purchase Pro to remove ads entirely
- Right to lodge a complaint: you may contact your local data protection authority. In Germany this is the Bundesbeauftragte für den Datenschutz und die Informationsfreiheit (BfDI) or your federal state's authority
Changes to this policy
If we materially change how the apps handle data, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where the change is significant, surface a notice in the app the next time you open it. Older versions of this policy are available on request.
